Kolkata, Sep 20 (PTI) The CPI(M) on Sunday accused the BJP and RSS of unleashing attacks on Left workers and demanded that the West Bengal government ensure rule of law as well as individual liberty, safety and security.
“The government must ensure individual liberty, safety and security,” CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim told PTI.
Salim accused the RSS and Bajrang Dal of attacking Left workers and said the government must establish the rule of law.
“Rule of law must be established. People’s personal security and civil liberties must be guaranteed,” he said, adding that the BJP had promised during the elections to ensure it.
The BJP was, however, quick to reject the allegations, saying that the alleged incidents were the result of an internal dispute within the TMC.
Salim alleged that instead of restoring people’s faith in the administration and police, “the BJP government is repeating the same mistake as was done by the TMC government, but with more aggression.” “The BJP and RSS will soon learn that West Bengal is a different cup of tea, and must draw a line between TMC goons and RSS activists,” he said.
Salim claimed that a series of attacks had taken place in recent days against CPI(M) workers and party offices in different parts of the state, including Jadavpur, Sonarpur, Baruipur, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar and Bardhaman.
He alleged that the BJP wanted to make West Bengal “opposition-free” and claimed that the growing support for the Left had “unnerved” the ruling party.
Accusing the BJP of trying to unleash fear among those opposed to them, CPI(M) central committee member Sujan Chakraborty said, “The BJP won 207 seats and has now divided the Trinamool Congress, but they are still afraid of the Leftists.” He alleged that in its four months of rule, the BJP has displayed its “true colours.” BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya rejected any connection between his party and the alleged incidents, claiming that the violence was the result of an internal dispute within the TMC.
“The TMC knows very well that this is a manifestation of its own internal division. None of our activists was involved. I will request Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to ensure police take action against any hooliganism as the BJP has zero tolerance for any such acts,” he said. PTI AMR MNB
