New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman invests only in mutual funds and has a home and mortgage loan, according to her asset declaration for 2025-26.
In total, she has assets worth Rs 2.91 crore and liabilities of Rs 8.87 lakh.
She owns a residential building in Hyderabad, valued at Rs 1.70 crore, jointly with her estranged husband. She also owns non-agricultural land in the city valued at Rs 17.08 lakh. She purchased the house in 2003 and the land in 1986.
The declaration lists two loans taken jointly with her husband—a home loan with a 19-year tenure and a mortgage loan with a 10-year tenure. The home loan amount has been listed as Rs 1.65 lakh and the mortgage loan amount has been listed as Rs 7.22 lakh, indicating the outstanding amounts. Sitharaman holds a 50% share in both loans.
Her other assets include a Bajaj Chetak scooter valued at Rs 28,200, 315 grams of gold worth Rs 36.22 lakh and 5.282 kg of silver worth Rs 12.67 lakh. The jewellery comprises her stridhan, gifts and items purchased by her.
The Finance Minister’s investments are more traditional and conservative, with no stake in the markets. She has mutual fund investments worth Rs 35.92 lakh. She also has bank deposits of Rs 12.19 lakh and Rs 5.11 lakh in the Public Provident Fund (PPF).
Sitharaman has served as the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs since 2019. She has been a Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka since 2016, having earlier represented Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2016.
In 2024, Sitharaman said she had been asked by the BJP’s top brass to consider contesting the Lok Sabha elections but decided against it, citing a lack of “money to contest” the polls.
“I also have a problem whether it is Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu. It’s also going to be a question of various other winnability criteria that they use… Are you from this community or are you from that religion? I said no, I do not think I am going to be able to do it,” she was quoted as saying at the Times Now Summit 2024.
