Ranchi, Oct 4 (PTI) RJD workers and members of the Left-backed AISA held separate protests here on Sunday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise.

RJD staged the demonstration at the Dhurwa Bus Stand Chowk in Ranchi and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the CEC to protest against the alleged vote theft by the poll panel.

Members of the Left-backed All India Students’ Association (AISA) held their protest at Albert Ekka Chowk and raised slogans such as ‘Stop murdering Democracy’ and ‘Terminate Gyanesh Kumar’.

“In the garb of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), names of 13 crore valid voters across the country have been deleted so far, violating their constitutional rights,” RJD Spokesperson Kailash Yadav said.

The party demands that the chief election commissioner be dismissed and fresh polling be conducted in Bihar, West Bengal and other states where “votes were deleted through SIR”, he said.

Yadav also said that the RJD will continue its protest until the CEC resigns.

“Vote theft through SIR has deprived crores of common people of their right to vote, and student organisations, political parties and civil society activists attempted to gather at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi demanding the resignation of the CEC, but Delhi police misbehaved with women journalists and protesters. It is an attack on the fourth pillar of democracy,” said Vijay Kumar, AISA’s Ranchi district president.

AISA demands the resignation of the CEC and action against police officers who “shielded the vote theft from being exposed”, he said. PTI RPS RPS BDC

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
