New Delhi: The ‘Remove China Apps’ — an app that identifies Chinese applications in phones for the users to remove them — is topping the charts of Google Play Store in the category of ‘top free’ Monday.

The application, developed by OneTouchAppLabs, identifies all China-made apps in an user’s phone. However, the users themselves have to uninstall the Chinese apps. The app is becoming popular in India, especially following the India-China border standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.

The app, which currently has a rating of 4.8, was launched on 17 May and has been downloaded over 10 lakh times since then.

OneTouchAppLabs, a Jaipur-based company, claims to have an experience of ‘8+ years in mobile and web application design, development and management’. However, the company has only one app listed on the Google Play Store.

How the app works

The app does not require more than 3.5 MB space in the phone and accepts any login ID to function.

On opening the app, users can see a button with the text ‘Click on Scan Now to find installed China apps in your system’. The users then have to click on the apps shown in the results and uninstall.

The app doesn’t detect inbuilt Chinese apps already installed in Chinese phones and can only detect apps installed by the user or third party websites.

The app’s popularity indicates growing anti-China sentiment in India.

Last week, entrepreneur and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, whose work inspired actor Amir Khan’s ‘3 Idiots’, appealed to people to boycott everything “made in China”. He said his call for boycott was in response to the Chinese aggression along the LAC.

Wangchuk also posted on Twitter, urging people to drop the use of Chinese apps “within a week” and said: “Cheen ko jawaab, sena degi bullet se, naagrik denge wallet se” (China will be responded to by the Army through bullets, by the citizens through wallet).

Following suit, model and actor Milind Soman announced he will no longer use Chinese video-making app TikTok, which is immensely popular in India.
