Bhubaneswar, Oct 3 (PTI) A man accused of raping a woman in her home sustained a bullet injury in a police encounter near here on Saturday when he resisted an attempt to arrest him, an officer said.

The incident took place when the accused tried to attack the police personnel with a sharp object as the force was attempting to arrest him, Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M told PTI.

In retaliation, police officers opened fire, and the accused suffered a bullet injury on his right leg, he said.

The man was going somewhere on a motorbike when the police, following a tip-off, intercepted him at Chandaka area.

“The injured accused person has been shifted to Capital Hospital,” the DCP said.

The man allegedly raped a 26-year-old woman at gunpoint while wearing a mask at her rented flat here on Wednesday night.

As per preliminary investigation, the accused was staying in Bhubaneswar for the past few years and was unknown to the victim, he said. PTI BBM NN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
