Jaipur, Oct 6 (PTI) The Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission has directed senior police and administrative officials to preserve the CCTV footage of a police station in connection with the death of an accused who allegedly suffered injuries following assault at the premises.

In an order issued on Tuesday, RSHRC Chairman Justice G R Moolchandani directed the Jaipur police commissioner, Jaipur district magistrate (DM) and additional director general of police (human rights) to secure and seal the CCTV recordings of the relevant period at Muhana police station and produce them before the commission.

The directions came after reports appeared in newspapers alleging that Rituraj, an accused in a case, was assaulted at Muhana police station and later died after remaining under treatment for around 15 days.

The commission noted that while the reports alleged police assault, the police had denied the allegation and claimed that the assault took place at a hotel, where CCTV footage was available.

Considering the matter serious, the commission also directed the officials to submit a factual report on the incident and ensure an effective inquiry by an IPS-rank officer.

The commission said no detainee can be assaulted under the rule of law and noted that courts have issued directions in similar cases, including for action against those responsible and compensation to victims.

Notices have been ordered to be issued to the concerned officials, with the matter listed for hearing on October 23. PTI AG KSS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
