Kota, Apr 16 (PTI) A private bus en route to Madhya Pradesh from Ahmedabad overturned after hitting a divider in Rajasthan’s Kota, killing three passengers and injuring nearly 20 others, police said on Thursday.

According to police, when the vehicle overturned, the front glass shattered and the three victims, who were travelling in the cabin of the bus, were flung onto the road, where they were run over by a speeding truck.

After receiving information about the accident around 12.30 am, Kota City SP Tejaswini Gautam, Fire Officer Rakesh Vyas and other officials rushed to the spot and initiated a rescue operation. The accident happened near Nayagaon overbridge under RK Puram police station.

Several passengers got trapped inside the damaged bus. They were rescued after a strenuous operation that lasted for more than two hours and continued till around 2.30 am, the police said.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Kota City) Dilip Saini confirmed that three passengers died on the spot while around 20 others sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to the New Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

The exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. However, preliminary inquiry suggests that the bus driver may have lost control of the vehicle, possibly after some cattle suddenly crossed the road.

Most of the passengers travelling in the bus reportedly belonged to Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior and Bhind. PTI COR NB NB
