New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) The BJP on Wednesday slammed Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over the INDIA bloc’s protest against the Election Commission, saying their conduct on the streets proved that “embracing anarchy to grab media attention” is the only path left for their party which has lost its mass base.

Condemning the Gandhi siblings for spearheading the protest for the second consecutive day, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Election Commission (EC) was ready for a meeting with them on Tuesday but they did not agree to it because they wanted to exercise their “khandaani adhikaar (dynastic privilege)”, not “samvaidhanik adhikaar (constitutional right)”.

“The Constitution provides that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Chief Justice of India (CJI) or the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)) cannot be asked to even come to Parliament. But, they want the CEC to appear before their party MPs,” he said.

Trivedi said whatever the Congress’ first family did on the streets of Delhi today was very “unfortunate and condemnable”.

“With their behaviour, the Congress’ first family made it evident that embracing anarchy to grab media attention remains the only path available for the ‘dimaagi Naxal’ Congress, which has lost its mass base,” the BJP Rajya Sabha MP added.

With their protest on Wednesday, the Gandhis also demonstrated that the Congress has no regard for “constitutionality”.

The BJP alleged that Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, tried to push a police woman when she, along with others in her team, was trying to remove one of the women protesters from the opposition INDIA bloc sit-in.

BJP national media co-convener Pradeep Bhandari posted on X a video clip of the scene and attacked the Congress leader, saying, “In his eagerness to make a reel, Rahul Gandhi attempts to push a female police personnel.”

Giving further momentum to his politics of street protest, Gandhi on Wednesday led INDIA bloc leaders to another resistance-packed day — moving from the opposition grouping’s vegetarian lunch meeting to near Jantar Mantar in a procession of buses for a surprise dharna. But for the second day, police stalled the planned anti-CEC protests midway, forcibly detaining him and other leaders. PTI PK PK KSS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
