Chandigarh, Jun 1 (PTI) O P Rana, Reader to the Punjab Director General of Vigilance, was sent to seven-day CBI remand after he surrendered before a Chandigarh court on Monday.

He was one of the accused named in an FIR registered by the CBI in the Rs 13 lakh bribery case linked to the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on May 11.

Rana, who had been absconding ever since the registration of the case, surrendered before the CBI court in Chandigarh after he failed to get relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

In a raid at the vigilance office in Mohali on May 11, the CBI had arrested two middlemen and another person over bribery charges.

The CBI action followed a complaint from a State Tax Officer, who accused middlemen Vikas Goyal and his son Raghav Goyal of demanding Rs 20 lakh to facilitate closure of a complaint against him in the office of the Director General of Vigilance, Punjab.

The CBI had alleged that both the accused were acting as intermediaries to senior vigilance officials, including Rana, and were using their influence to assure the complainant that his matter could be settled.

The agency had earlier said that Rana allegedly assured the officer a closure of his complaint once the illegal gratification was paid.

During negotiations, the accused reduced the demand from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 13 lakh, along with one Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 mobile phone for Rana. PTI CHS RUK RUK
