Chandigarh, Apr 27 (PTI) AAP Lok Sabha MP from Punjab’s Anandpur Sahib Malvinder Singh Kang on Monday slammed seven Rajya Sabha MPs, who defected to the BJP, accusing them of “betraying” the party that “gave them a lot of respect”.

Kang further said that AAP MLAs in Punjab firmly stand with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Replying to a question on seven Rajya Sabha members quitting the AAP, Kang said they joined the BJP for their “personal interests”.

“They betrayed the party which gave them a lot of respect. They joined the political party which always tries to divide society,” he alleged while speaking to reporters.

“We feel that they had personal interests. Of them, some were scared of central agencies like Enforcement Directorate. They switched sides to save their businesses,” the AAP leader said.

“The MLAs in Punjab firmly stand with Bhagwant Mann and the AAP would continue to serve people of the state,” Kang said in a reply to another question.

On Friday, the Aam Aadmi Party suffered a jolt when seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha MPs — Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajendra Gupta, Vikramjit Sahney and Swati Maliwal — quit and merged with the BJP, alleging that the party had strayed from its principles, values and core morals.

Six of the seven MPs who quit AAP were from Punjab.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan on Monday officially accepted the merger of seven AAP MPs with the BJP, reducing the strength of Arvind Kejriwal’s party in the Upper House to three. PTI CHS NB
