Chandigarh, Oct 8 (PTI) Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh and party general secretary incharge of the state Sachin Pilot offered prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Thursday.

Singh, 61, a former Olympian, ex-Indian hockey captain and a three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantt, replaced Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as the Punjab Congress chief last week.

Singh and Pilot landed at the Amritsar airport in the morning. A large number of party leaders and workers had assembled outside the airport to welcome them.

Dhols were played as the two leaders stepped out of the airport.

Later, Singh and Pilot, along with party leaders and workers, headed to the Golden Temple.

“Today I came here to offer ‘shukrana’ (thanks) and seek blessings,” Singh told reporters in Amritsar.

He will also visit Durgiana temple, St Paul Church and Ram Tirath temple.

MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, former deputy chief minister O P Soni, former minister Raj Kumar Verka, Vijay Inder Singla and Sukhwinder Singh Danny were among the party leaders present at the Golden Temple.

“Today we came here under the leadership of Sachin Pilot. We all will work for the welfare of Punjab,” Verka said.

The Congress replaced Warring as Punjab Congress chief after weeks of internal unrest over the state leadership that had threatened to hurt the party’s campaign for the crucial assembly elections due early next year. PTI CHS DIV

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
