Chandigarh, Oct 1 (PTI) Akali Dal Waris Punjab De leader Manpreet Singh Ayali on Thursday accused the Election Commission of India of unnecessarily and deliberately delaying the party’s registration and said that the outfit will regardless contest the upcoming polls.

In a video posted on his social media page, Ayali claimed that his party fulfilled all the conditions for registration, but the Election Commission of India (ECI) was “deliberately delaying” it.

“They have said that with the registration of our party, there will be a threat to the country’s security,” Ayali said, and asked whether the outfit had ever made any statement or conducted activity that was not as per the Constitution.

“Deliberately, the registration is being delayed,” he alleged.

Asserting that they will certainly fight the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls, Ayali said, “We earlier fought elections as Independents. If the party’s registration is not done, our candidates will contest elections as Independents,” he said.

“We want to make it absolutely clear that no kind of obstacle can break our resolve. No force can stop Akali Dal Waris Punjab De from entering the field of the 2027 assembly elections and becoming the voice of the people,” the Dakha MLA said.

Punjabis, especially Sikhs, have made a very significant contribution in securing the country’s Independence, he said. “But unfortunately, attempts have repeatedly been made on many occasions to suppress the voice of Sikhs,” he alleged, further claiming that there was widespread resentment among Sikhs in the country and abroad due to the delay caused by the ECI.

Whenever Punjab speaks about its rights, whenever Sikhs speak about their rights and their issues, attempts are made to suppress their voice, Ayali claimed.

Akali Dal Waris Punjab De is led by Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in a jail in Assam in the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case.

In a recent development, within four days of joining the party, former Enforcement Directorate deputy director Niranjan Singh quit the Amritpal Singh-led outfit, citing differences on some issues.

He joined the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De on September 23, announcing his departure on September 27.

Singh said he disassociates himself from the outfit.

“I had given my support to the Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, on the issues of drug menace in Punjab, high corruption, gangsters, extortion and involvement of police personnel in drug trafficking, but there are differences on some issues which are non-negotiable. The conduct of persons in public life has to be within the Constitution of India. I wish them well,” Singh said in a post after his exit. PTI CHS

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
