Patiala, Oct 6 (PTI) State-owned power utility Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is undertaking major initiatives to augment the state’s transmission capacity to meet growing electricity demand and ensure reliable power supply, its chairman and managing director Gurkirat Kirpal Singh said on Tuesday.
Singh said merely increasing power generation was not sufficient and that strengthening the transmission network was equally important for efficient transmission and distribution of available power.
“Concerted efforts are being made to enhance the capacity of Punjab’s transmission network so that it can effectively cater to the state’s increasing power requirements in the coming years,” he said.
The CMD further said a special drive was underway to curb power theft and reduce line losses.
Enforcement teams were conducting field-level inspections and action was being taken against defaulting consumers, including disconnection of electricity connections, he said.
Punjab’s power demand touched a record of 17,452 MW in July 2026.
The state’s total electricity consumption during the year stood at around 76,053 million units (MUs). The total energy requirement for 2026-27 is projected at 86,228 MUs, with peak demand estimated to reach 17,873 MW.
Singh said changing weather patterns led to intense heat conditions across Punjab, resulting in a sharp increase in electricity demand. The demand was further pushed up by continuous operation of agricultural tubewells and pumps during the peak paddy transplantation season.
PSPCL will continue to strengthen its transmission and distribution infrastructure, improve revenue recovery and intensify action against power theft and losses to ensure reliable electricity supply across the state, Singh said. PTI COR CHS DRR
