Agartala, Oct 8 (PTI) Tripura DGP (in-charge) GS Rao on Thursday said the probe into the unnatural death of his predecessor Anurag Dhankar would be completed soon.
Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead in the washroom of his chamber at the state police headquarters on July 20.
“The investigation into the death of former DGP Anurag Dhankar is going on at full pace. It is a sensitive and sensational case. We will complete the probe soon,” he told reporters at the police headquarters.
Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha informed the Assembly that the death of Dhankar was ‘suicidal in nature’.
Dhankar had led the CBI investigation into the Rs 13,000-crore Punjab National Bank fraud involving diamond merchant Nirav Modi and later headed an SIT that reinvestigated the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
On the smart border project, Rao said 806 km out of 856 km of the international border with Bangladesh had been fully fenced so far, and the rest remained unfenced for various reasons – difficult terrain, water bodies and dense forest.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the state in June and announced that ‘smart borders’ – an integration of local administration, technology and the dedication of security personnel — would be implemented.
“Following the Ministry of Home Affairs’ plan for a smart border project, both the police and BSF prepared proposals, and we will pursue the concept in a phased manner. Several other measures were taken to strengthen border management,” he said.
Rao said elaborate security arrangements have been planned to ensure peaceful celebration of Durga Puja, the biggest festival in the northeastern state commencing on October 17.
“Over 10,000 Tripura State Rifles and police personnel will be deployed on puja duties across the state. Around 180 CCTV cameras will be installed in key locations of the city to monitor the movement of people. A green corridor will be opened to allow ambulances or any emergency vehicle to pass during the puja days,” he said.
The state capital Agartala will host 450 community pujas. PTI PS NN
