New Delhi: Three IPS officers were directed to appear before a medical board constituted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) last week for an “independent evaluation” of their health status, after remaining on prolonged leave citing medical reasons, ThePrint has learnt.

Gaurav Sharma of the 2009 batch (transferred to Leh in September 2024), Bijendra Kumar Yadav of the 2010 batch (transferred to Puducherry in February 2023) and Shankar Chaudhary of the 2011 batch (transferred to Mizoram in July 2023) had joined their respective postings from Delhi, but went on prolonged leave citing health concerns.

All the three are AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories) cadre officers.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order dated 3 July, sent to Chief Secretaries of Union Territories of Ladakh, Puducherry and Mizoram, a copy of which is with ThePrint, the officers were asked to furnish their medical records and health certificates before the committee.

A nine-member medical board will carry out the evaluation, it added.

“Gaurav Sharma, IPS, Bijendra Kumar Yadav, IPS and Shankar Choudhary, IPS, are required to present before the medical board on the stipulated date, time and venue along with relevant medical documents (original and photo copy) and their photo I.D. proof,” the order said.

Reached out for a comment, Choudhary refused to comment. ThePrint made attempts to reach other two officers as well. This article will be updated as and when a response is received.

Before the MHA move, Chaudhary’s name surfaced in an FIR filed by the Vigilance unit of the Delhi Police in connection to a raid conducted without authorisation and legality by him in the national capital in November 2023. At that time, he was posted as the Superintendent of Police of Mizoram’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force.

In a preliminary inquiry conducted by a Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) rank officer, Choudhary was found to have “acted beyond his legal and territorial authority,” and “conducted unauthorised raids and seizures within Delhi, violating legal and administrative protocols.”

Choudhary was shunted out from Dwarka district of Delhi in June 2022 on the orders of the police commissioner after he was accused of injuring a woman during a brawl in a bar in South Delhi.

Yadav, too, has had his share of controversies and allegations in the past. He was accused of assaulting and abusing doctors on duty at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital in November 2024 when his wife, also an IPS officer, was admitted for treatment. The scuffle was condemned by the association of doctors.
