Chandigarh, Sep 8 (PTI) Police on Tuesday used a water cannon to disperse Punjab Congress leaders and workers who were trying to proceed towards the residence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as the opposition party lashed out at the AAP government over several issues, including alleged drug menace in the state.
Led by Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the Punjab Congress held a protest outside its office and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Mann.
A heavy police force was deployed by the Chandigarh Police to prevent the protesters from heading towards the residence of the CM to ‘gherao’ it.
As the Congress leaders and workers carrying placards tried to breach barricades, police used water cannon to disperse a large number of protesters.
Earlier, the Punjab Congress staged a demonstration during which party leaders slammed the Bhagwant Mann government over the issues of alleged drug menace and deteriorating law and order.
Addressing a gathering of protesters, Warring alleged that the law and order situation has “collapsed” under the AAP regime.
He took on the Mann government, saying the so-called ‘Sikhya Kranti’ of the AAP government has proven to be a “complete failure.” Warring said there is a huge debt on the state, criticising the AAP government for “heavy borrowings.” Several party leaders, including Congress MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, former minister Balbir Singh Sidhu and former MLAs Rana KP Singh and Raj Kumar Verka, were present in the protest.
