Jamshedpur(Jharkhand), May 25 (PTI) Two motorcycle lifters were arrested, and five stolen bikes were recovered by police in Jamshedpur, an officer said on Monday.

In the course of investigation of a motorcycle theft case registered with Sakchi police station limit here on May 20, police arrested two persons and recovered five stolen motorcycles from their possession on Monday, Superintendent of Police (City) Lalit Meena said at a press conference here.

A police team headed by the officer-in-charge of Sakchi police station, Gopal Krishna Yadav, examined the CCTV footage and identified the bike lifter involved in the incident, the SP said.

The police team conducted a raid and arrested one Shamshad Alam from Azadnagar police station limit, and a subsequent interrogation led police to arrest his accomplice Arun Mukherjee from Mango police station jurisdiction, the SP said.

The police have recovered two stolen bikes from Shamshad and three from Arun Mukherjee.

The SP said the two-wheeler lifters used to replace the vehicle registration number with a fake one, scratched the chassis and engine numbers before disposing of those vehicles at throw-away prices. They used to dump unsold vehicles in a garage at a reasonable price.

Shamshad used to steal two-wheelers from different police station areas and hand it over to Arun, who replaces the registration number, erases the chassis and engine number and sells them, the SP added. PTI BS RG
