Gurugram: Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan has written to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, demanding a high-level, impartial and time-bound probe into IPS Y. Puran Kumar’s suicide.

With Bihar assembly election dates already announced, opposition parties have been targeting the BJP on Dalit issues after the shoe-throwing on the CJI. Now, even ruling party BJP’s alliance partner at the Centre has attacked the party openly.

Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar committed suicide on 7 October, accusing Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia of trying to frame him in a false case of corruption.

In his suicide note, the 52-year-old IPS officer also named 13 other present and past officers whom he accused of having harassed and humiliated him over his Scheduled Caste.

Four days after the suicide, Kumar’s IAS wife, Amneet P. Kumar, has not given her consent for the postmortem of her husband, with a clear message the accused must be arrested first.

“It is known that on 7 October 2025, senior IPS officer of Haryana cadre, Y. Puran Kumar, ended his life by suicide at his (government) residence in Chandigarh. This extremely painful and distressing news has shaken the entire administrative circle as well as society. This is not merely the suicide of an officer but a grim indication of the deep-rooted caste-based oppression prevailing within our administrative system. This incident has spread like poison in the entire society,” Paswan has said in his letter to Saini.

The Union minister further said it was extremely tragic and distressing that a senior officer, who devoted his entire life to law, discipline, and service, had to ultimately succumb to such an inhuman system.

He said, “the words in suicide note are not only disturbing but have shaken the very conscience of our administrative setup. This is not just about an individual, but it concerns the dignity and sensitivity of the entire administrative system.

“Today, if any officer is mentally tormented due to his caste, ideology, or integrity, it is not just condemnable but an assault on the soul of our Constitution itself,” Paswan said.

He urged the Haryana CM that in view of this extremely serious and sensitive matter, it was imperative that a high-level, impartial, and time-bound inquiry be conducted so that the truth behind the incident can come to light and those responsible can be held accountable.

He said the incident had raised many questions about the functioning of the administrative system and the prevailing environment within it. If prompt and transparent action was not taken, it could further erode the morale of honest officers and the confidence of the public in governance.

“Therefore, I request you to kindly direct that a special investigation team (SIT) or a judicial inquiry be constituted under the supervision of a senior and impartial officer, so that a thorough and fair investigation can be ensured. It is also essential that during the investigation, all aspects related to caste-based discrimination, administrative pressure, and institutional harassment be examined with complete fairness and sensitivity. Only such decisive action can ensure justice for the late officer and restore faith in our administrative system,” Paswan added in his two-page letter to Nayab Saini.

Among the opposition leaders, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also targeted the BJP government on this issue.

In a post on X on Friday, Priyanka said, “The entire nation is shocked by the suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar Ji, who was reportedly distressed due to caste-based harassment. The ongoing pattern of injustice, atrocities, and violence against Dalits across the country is alarming. First, the murder of Hariom Valmiki Ji in Raebareli, then the humiliation of the Chief Justice, and now the suicide of a senior officer—all these incidents prove that under the BJP regime, life has become a curse for Dalits. Whether an ordinary citizen or someone holding a high position, if they belong to the Dalit community, injustice and inhumanity never leave their side. If this is the plight of Dalits in high offices, one can only imagine the suffering of ordinary Dalits in society.”

On 9 October, Rahul Gandhi posted a hard hitting message targeting the BJP government. He said, “The suicide of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar Ji symbolises the deepening social poison that is crushing humanity in the name of caste. When an IPS officer has to endure humiliation and persecution because of his caste, one can only imagine the conditions in which ordinary Dalit citizens live. The murder of Hariom Valmiki in Raebareli, the insult to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and now Puran Ji’s death—these incidents reflect that injustice against the marginalised has reached its peak. The hatred and Manusmriti-driven ideology of the BJP-RSS have filled society with venom. Dalits, Adivasis, backward communities, and Muslims are losing faith in justice. This struggle is not just Puran Ji’s—it is the struggle of every Indian who believes in the Constitution, equality, and justice.”

After Gandhi, almost every Congress leader in Haryana, from the Leader of Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, State Congress President Rao Narendra Singh, AICC general secretaries Kumari Selja and Randeep Singh Surjewala, MP Deepender Hooda to former MP Brijendra Singh targeted the BJP government on the issue.

Varun Chaudhry, Congress MP from Ambala (SC) Lok Sabha constituency, Friday met the Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria and demanded impartial investigation and justice and protection for the family.

“Today, in Ludhiana, a meeting was held with the Administrator of Chandigarh and Governor of Punjab, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria Ji, along with Shri Amit Ratan Ji (brother of Smt. Amneet Kumar Ji) and the MLA, to inform him about the caste-based harassment faced by Shri Pooran Kumar Ji, IPS, which led him to commit suicide. A demand was made for an impartial investigation and for justice and protection to be provided to the family members,” Chaudhry posted on his social media X on Friday.
