New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has said that people will soon move out of the national capital if the central government did not sit up and hold authorities accountable for the rampant crime in the state.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal was asked about the murder of a 19-year-old student in the Delhi University’s south campus Sunday, apparently because he had objected to inappropriate behaviour with his girlfriend.
First-year student of the School of Open Learning Nikhil Chauhan was stabbed in the chest outside the Aryabhatta College Sunday afternoon as revenge for standing up for his girlfriend, the police said.
The cops have arrested one Rahul, 19, a resident of Delhi’s Bindapur and his associate Haroon, also 19 from the Janakpuri area.
Maliwal said the law and order situation in Delhi had absolutely crumbled. “Nobody is safe in Delhi, rich or poor, residents of posh areas or of slums,” she told news agency ANI on Monday.

“A 19-year-old student stood outside his college with his female friend. A few people molested her. The boy attempts to save her and is stabbed to death. This is Delhi University. A very high-profile area where students from all over the country attend college,” said the angry DCW head.
She said nobody in Delhi was afraid of the law, rubbishing the central government’s initiatives on women’s security as “tall talk”.
Maliwal said the Delhi Police should immediately be made accountable and the system pulled up so that people become afraid of the law.
She said the women’s body will issue a notice to the Delhi Police over Chauhan’s death and also on the recent murders of two sisters who were shot dead over a loan dispute.
“Yes, arrests can take place on our notices. But is the system changing? Are we moving ahead on safety? We can’t move forward if the Centre closes its doors on women’s security in the capital,” she added.
Meanwhile, Nikhil Chauhan’s parents said they had been told that two accused had been arrested. The father said he was not being allowed inside the police station, and had been told not to speak with the media. The mother demanded immediate justice for her son.
