Indore, Oct 6 (PTI) A passenger bus was gutted in a fire in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district on Tuesday, but no one was injured as around 40 passengers, the driver and conductor, managed to get out before the blaze spread, officials said.

Arth Jain, executive director of Atal Indore City Transport Services Limited (AICTSL), a government-owned public transport company, told PTI that the passenger bus operating on the Ujjain-Indore road caught fire due to unknown reasons in the Panthpiplai area in the afternoon.

He said the old vehicle, owned by a private operator, was associated with the Chief Minister’s Sugam Parivahan Seva, launched by the state government a few days ago.

Jain said that as soon as the fire started, around 40 passengers on board were safely evacuated and transferred to an alternative bus.

“The fire on the bus was brought under control soon. The cause of the incident is being investigated,” he said, adding that a show-cause notice has been issued to the bus operator.

He said the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been directed to cancel the bus permit and investigate the vehicle’s fitness certificate and other legal parameters for its operation. PTI HWP MAS NSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
