Gorakhpur (UP), May 5 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said voters will eventually wipe out political parties that ignore public welfare, promote corruption and patronise criminal elements, citing the recent West Bengal assembly election results as an example.

As the results were announced on Monday, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress suffered a major defeat at the hands of the BJP, which is set to form its first-ever government in the state where Adityanath had also held rigorous pre-poll campaigns.

Addressing a public gathering in Gorakhpur after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for 71 development projects worth Rs 612.32 crore, the chief minister said the people of West Bengal have delivered a “strong message” against alleged misgovernance.

He asserted that the state would now move towards becoming “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal) under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The projects launched by Adityanath included Kalyan Mandapam, a newly constructed convention centre built at a cost of over Rs 5 crore in the Jungle Beni Madhav area.

Highlighting Gorakhpur’s transformation since 2017, the chief minister said development gathers pace when governance is driven by “clear intent, transparent policies and firm resolve”.

He said the city once associated with poor infrastructure and law-and-order concerns is now identified with better security, cleanliness, prosperity and improved road connectivity.

Adityanath also targeted previous governments, alleging that the Gorakhpur fertiliser plant had become a “symbol of corruption” during the Congress and Samajwadi Party regimes.

“The plant is now functioning successfully, and several long-pending infrastructure projects, including four-lane roads and overbridges, have been completed,” he said.

The chief minister said the travel time between Gorakhpur and Lucknow, which earlier took eight to nine hours, has now been reduced to around three-and-a-half hours. The connectivity to Varanasi has also improved significantly.

The upcoming Jungle Kaudia-Jagdishpur four-lane bypass would enhance connectivity towards Kushinagar and aid regional expansion, he said.

Adityanath said rapid infrastructure development would boost economic growth, generate employment opportunities and attract investment in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

He also highlighted the role of institutions such as All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Baba Raghav Das Medical College, and the proposed Ayush University in strengthening healthcare and education facilities in Gorakhpur.

Speaking on the occasion, BJP MP Ravi Kishan said the government was committed to inclusive development and welfare schemes without discrimination.
