New Delhi: A 24-year-old rape survivor is under treatment after being attacked, allegedly by the accused and two of his associates, in a Rajasthan village Saturday night. All three have been arrested.

She was shot at and hit with an axe in her village in Kotputli-Behror district while returning home with her brother. The assault took place some 20 metres from the nearest police station.

An assistant sub-inspector has been suspended for not taking action after she filed a complaint alleging threat to her life, ThePrint has learnt.

The woman suffered multiple injuries to her hands, legs, head and back, a police source said. Her brother was also injured.

The three accused have been identified as Rajendra Yadav, Mahipal Gurjar and Rahul Gurjar. After the attack, the police said, Yadav jumped in front of a train. He is also undergoing treatment.

According to police sources, the woman had accused Yadav of rape and lodged an FIR in January last year. Yadav was arrested after the complaint and came out on bail in August. Soon after, he allegedly started threatening the woman with dire consequences if she did not withdraw the complaint.

“She lodged a complaint, but ASI Dilip Kumar didn’t act on it. He has been suspended. We are looking into negligence by other police officers as well and everyone who didn’t perform their duty will be punished,” a police officer said, not wanting to be named.

The accused have been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Arms Act.
