Mansa, Oct 27 (PTI) Opposition leaders in Punjab on Tuesday accused the police of forcibly taking away the coffin carrying a man’s body as his family was staging a protest.

Even as the police maintained that the reason for the man’s death was under investigation, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia indicated in an X post that he died of a drug overdose.

A police official said they have appealed to the man’s protesting family members to give consent to get a post-mortem done so that the cause of his death could be known.

“They have blocked the road. We appeal to the man’s family to get a post-mortem done. His father should give a statement; we will register the case. We want a post-mortem done to know the cause of death,” the police official told reporters.

Majithia shared a video on X, showing the police taking away the coffin with the man’s body, and said, “Punjab Police once again violating human rights. The situation is reminiscent of 1984!”

He said police snatching a body and fleeing with it was a grave insult to the deceased.

“In Mansa, drugs claimed the life of 35-year-old Daljit. As his family sat on the Sirsa Mansa Road with his body demanding justice, police forcibly took away the body and fled,” Majithia alleged.

He said Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann wants to suppress every truth, “but Punjab has awakened. Punjab will no longer be silenced.” PTI SUN VSD RUK
