‘Operation Toofan’: Over 13,000 arrested in Keralam

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 6 (PTI) Keralam Police have arrested 13,002 people and registered 12,050 cases so far as part of “Operation Toofan”, the anti-narcotics drive launched by the home department, officials said on Tuesday.

As many as 39 people were arrested in 37 cases registered on Monday, taking the total number of arrests under the drive to 13,002, they said.

Police have so far seized 26,057.374 grams of MDMA and 1,634.780 kg of ganja as part of the operation.

Among the cases registered on Monday, 15 involved possession of small quantities of narcotic substances, one involved a medium quantity and another involved a commercial quantity, police said.

Besides, 20 cases were registered under various provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and 34 under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), they said.

Police seized 153.379 grams of MDMA and 5.346 kg of ganja from those arrested in the cases registered on Monday.

As part of Operation Toofan, police conducted 42 awareness classes across the state on Monday alone. So far, 10,852 awareness classes and 877 counselling sessions have been held, officials said.

School and college protection groups have also conducted 7,718 awareness programmes as part of the campaign.

The public can share information about drug trafficking with police station at the dedicated phone and WhatsApp numbers.
