Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 20 (PTI) As many as 12,111 persons have been arrested in cases registered as part of Operation Toofan, a statewide anti-drug drive launched by the Keralam Police, officials said on Sunday.
According to a statement issued by the Keralam Police, a total of 11,241 cases have been registered under the operation so far, with 198 persons arrested in 188 cases on Saturday.
Police have so far seized 24,010.692 grams of MDMA, 1,520.724 kg of ganja, 541.547 grams of heroin and 708.819 grams of brown sugar as part of the drive, which was launched in June this year after the UDF government came to power, officials said.
Of the cases registered on Saturday, 72 involved possession of small quantities of narcotic substances, six involved medium quantities and two involved commercial quantities.
Another 108 cases were registered under the NDPS Act and 189 under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, officials said.
Police seized 55.554 grams of MDMA, 26.541 kg of ganja, 11 grams of heroin and one gram of brown sugar in connection with the cases registered on Saturday.
As part of Operation Toofan, the police conducted 27 awareness classes across the state on Saturday.
The total number of awareness classes conducted under the drive has now reached 10,004, while 804 counselling sessions have been held.
School and college protection groups have conducted 6,945 awareness programmes as part of the initiative, officials said. PTI TBA SSK
