New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI) The Delhi Police detained National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) president Vinod Jakhar and several members during a protest at Parliament Street Police Station on Thursday over the alleged assault on its women workers, the Congress-affiliated student body claimed.

The NSUI said its members were staging a dharna demanding the registration of an FIR against a Delhi Police woman officer accused of assaulting its women members.

The organisation alleged that despite approaching senior police officials, including the Additional DCP on Wednesday, no FIR had been registered on its complaint.

Addressing the media, Jakhar alleged that NSUI women workers had been assaulted and claimed that some of them were taken to a dark room, where they were attacked with shoes and boots.

“We have come here only to seek the registration of an FIR, but the DCP is neither speaking to us nor listening to us. Is demanding justice for our women workers a crime?” he said.

NSUI national media in-charge Ravi Pandey condemned the alleged detention of Jakhar and other members, accusing the police of detaining those seeking accountability instead of acting on their complaint.

Pandey demanded the immediate registration of an FIR and an impartial investigation into the alleged assault.

He also accused the Delhi Police of shielding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the police were acting under political influence.

The NSUI warned that it would intensify its protests if an FIR was not registered, asserting that the detention of its leadership would not deter it from pursuing the matter.

The organisation said it would continue its protest until its demands were addressed. PTI AHD APL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
