Shahjahanpur (UP), Aug 3 (PTI) Authorities have launched demolition proceedings against the house of a man who allegedly hacked a 22-year-old youth to death and alleged that the property was constructed illegally, officials said on Monday.
Officials said Gautam Maurya was allegedly killed on Friday night by Samir Ali, who was reportedly upset over Maurya posting a photograph with Ali’s sister on Instagram.
Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Rajnish Mishra said on Monday that notices were pasted on the house in Kant town, giving the occupants 10 days to remove the alleged illegal construction. If they fail to comply, the Nagar Panchayat will demolish it, he said.
Maurya’s killing triggered protests on Saturday; thousands gathered outside the police station, blocking the Palia-Jalalabad highway and forcing markets to shut.
Mishra said the notice, issued by Kant Nagar Panchayat Executive Officer Noorjahan, was served on Samir’s mother, Salma, the owner of the house, as well as occupants: Ameeran and Naseem Jahan.
The notice alleged that the structure was built in violation of the Uttar Pradesh Municipalities Act, 1916. Superintendent of Police Saurabh Dixit said the murder involved persons from two different communities and cautioned that strict action would be taken against anyone spreading rumours or misinformation on social media.
