New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI) After his forcible removal from a sit-in protest against “vote chori” at the Akashvani Bhawan and detention, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday said there will be accountability and not a single “traitor” would be spared.

“To save the traitors of democracy, the remnants of democracy have been dragged.

“There will be accountability — not a single traitor will be spared,” Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X, soon after he was detained and taken to the Kingsway Camp police lines.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said Gandhi was peacefully sitting on a dharna, demanding a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) and asserted that registering a peaceful protest is his constitutional right.

“Despite this, forcibly detaining the Leader of the Opposition by the Delhi Police, controlled by Amit Shah, raises serious questions about the Constitution and democratic rights.

“Considerable nervousness is evident in the behaviour of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister,” Kharge said in a post on X.

“Remember — in a democracy, the ultimate power lies with the people. The people hold everyone accountable for every action,” the Congress president, who had joined the protest march against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the morning, said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was also detained by police along with her brother Rahul Gandhi, told reporters while being taken away by the security personnel, “The nation has never seen a coward government like this…. Is this a way? Staging a protest is our right.”

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh also took to X, saying, “Method Of Disenfranchising Indians has just become Murder of Democracy in India.”

“The LOP-Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been dragged away from a peaceful sit-in protest that had a simple and straightforward demand — a meeting with the Election Commission of India.

“The Delhi Police that is controlled by the co-conspirator of the Murder of Democracy in India has arrested the LOP-LS and others. This is the sign of a regime that knows its exit is imminent,” he said.

Ramesh later attacked the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for coming out in support of the EC and said, “The public is asking questions of the Election Commission, and the BJP is stepping in as a shield.”

“The BJP holding five press conferences since morning to defend the Election Commissioner itself reveals that it’s not just a black spot in the lentils — rather, the entire pot of lentils is pitch black,” he noted.

“Why on earth is the ruling party so rattled?” the Congress leader asked.

“This unprecedented defence is rock-solid proof of collusion between the two,” he alleged. PTI SKC RC

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
