New Delhi: Hours after the video of a 35-year-old man being bludgeoned with a brick in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad surfaced, the police were yet to make arrests in the case till Wednesday evening.

An FIR, a copy of which is with ThePrint, was filed by the victim’s father, a retired Delhi Police sub-inspector.

“The incident happened last night (Tuesday) around 9pm. The victim had gone to a restaurant with his friends and after some time a fight broke out between him and some other group over some issue. A brick was thrown at the victim that led to his death,” Additional Superintendent of Police (City-2), Ghaziabad, Gyanendra Kumar Singh, told ThePrint.

The now viral video shows the victim, identified as Varun Kumar alias Arun, being beaten outside a restaurant on Loni Road in Ghaziabad. One of the accused, who is yet to be identified, can be seen smashing the victim’s head with a brick as he lay lifeless on the busy road near Teela Mod area.

The victim, who was a resident of Jawli village in the Teela Mor area of Ghaziabad, was rushed to the GTB Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on the way.

“The person who smashed the head of the victim with a brick is still not arrested. The car which the men (the accused) used had been traced and our search is on for the perpetrators,” Singh stated.

ASP Singh also said the police still “have not found any motive” behind the murder.

“For now, we only see one man in the video who attacked the victim. He (the man who attacked the victim) was in a four-wheeler and was accompanied by four other men. The fight happened between them,” he added.

According to a PTI report, Kumar had gone to the eatery for dinner and parked his car next to another vehicle, the door of which could not be opened due to it. This allegedly led to an altercation, after which Kumar was brutally beaten up.

In a statement on Twitter, ASP Singh also said that five teams have been constituted to find the accused.

What the FIR says

The Ghaziabad SP said two men, Sanjay Rawat and Deepak (identified only by his first name), have been detained for questioning as their name surfaced in the FIR.

Rawat and Deepak had allegedly accompanied the victim to the restaurant and were present at the crime spot. Both Rawat and Deepak are from the same locality of the victim, states the FIR.

According to the FIR, Deepak had informed Kumar’s family about the brawl and the victim being hit with a brick by the accused. When Kumar’s family members reached the spot, they found him covered in blood. The FIR also states that Rawat and Deepak fled the spot without helping Kumar.
