The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is set to hold a one-day camp in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, on 6 March to hear pending cases of alleged human rights violations. A number of cases will be taken up for consideration during the camp, including charging of exorbitant fees by college authorities, non-payment of pensionary benefits, forced eviction of tribals, death of a sanitation worker, and rape of a minor.
According to a statement by the body, NHRC chairperson Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra, and other members of the commission will visit Vijayawada Wednesday to hear the cases and interact with the state government and civil society representatives in the state.
The hearing of the cases in Vijayawada will be held in the presence of state authorities and concerned complainants. The commission has also invited representatives of civil society organizations, NGOs, and human rights defenders to participate in the hearing.
The commission will meet the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and other senior officers of Andhra Pradesh after the hearing of the cases to discuss the ways and means of strengthening the human rights protection regime in the state.
