New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission Monday took Suo Motu cognizance of the death of two students due to electrocution while cleaning the water tank of a government-run hostel in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh, a PIB press release stated.

NHRC has called for a detailed report from the government on the 25 September incident within the next two weeks. The commission has also requested the Director General of Police and the Chief Secretary to provide complete information about the status of the police investigation and compensation paid to the families of the victims.

The two students belonging to a Scheduled Tribe, were allegedly asked to clean the water tank by the hostel superintendent. While cleaning the tank, they came into contact with a live wire connected to a water pump inside the tank. The villagers who were present at the time saw the students lying in the tank. The villagers reportedly informed the hostel authorities.

The NHRC has expressed concern over the alleged human rights violation of the two students.
