Need equal focus on adaptation, mitigation, means of implementation: Bhupender Yadav ahead of COP31

New Delhi, Oct 6 (PTI) Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on Tuesday called for equal attention to adaptation, mitigation, and means of implementation in the run-up to this year’s UN Climate Change Conference, also called COP31, which will be held in November in Türkiye’s Antalya.

Yadav made the remarks while addressing the leaders’ plenary in Fiji — part of the pre-COP31 meetings co-hosted by Australia, Fiji, and Tuvalu. Pre-COP is a preparatory meeting held a few weeks before the conference.

“As we move towards COP31, India believes that adaptation, mitigation and means of implementation must receive equal attention, while the key principles of CBDR-RC must be upheld in letter and spirit,” Yadav said.

CBDR-RC stands for Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities, and its principles acknowledge that all states have a shared obligation to address environmental destruction but deny equal responsibility of all states with regard to environmental protection.

Yadav also stressed that there cannot be a “one-size-fits-all” pathway to climate action. He highlighted that local studies and assessments are important for finding solutions to emerging challenges of the area.

“These solutions, in turn, indicate the mitigation and adaptation measures required and the commensurate resources required for the same,” he said.

The minister also said India, with its vast coastline and islands, fully understands the challenges faced by Pacific island countries. PTI ALC RHL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
