Guwahati, May 4 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday thanked the people for the NDA’s stupendous performance in the assembly polls, and said it was a reflection of the “good work of the government” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s thrust on development of the northeastern state.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters here, Sarma said, “It is an unprecedented victory for a ruling alliance. It is for the first time that the BJP has secured a majority in the state.” The BJP won 62 seats and was ahead in 20 constituencies, while its ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) bagged seven seats and was leading in three, and the other alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured four constituencies and was leading in six, according to the Election Commission.
On the Congress’ performance, which is not likely to cross the 20-seat tally, Sarma said, “People have punished them for politicising singer Zubeen Garg’s death.” He claimed that barring one or two, there will be no Hindu MLAs in the Opposition, and urged “good” Hindu Congress leaders to join the BJP to secure the state’s future and fight the “aggression” of “Bangladeshi Miyas”.
Sarma also asserted that India will remain a Hindu nation till the Sun and the Moon exists.
