Kolkata, Aug 4 (PTI) National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday said its chairperson Vijaya K Rahatkar will be on a three-day visit to West Bengal from August 5 to participate in a series of programmes focusing on women’s safety and grassroots outreach.
Her itinerary includes interactions with students, women self-help groups, senior police officers and district officials, besides chairing two public hearings on women’s grievances, the panel said in a release.
The visit will begin Wednesday with the ‘Campus Calling’ programme at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), where the NCW chief will interact with students on women’s rights, constitutional values and legal awareness.
She will later meet women self-help groups at Dhano Dhanya Auditorium here and participate in the ‘She Serves’ programme at the National Library Auditorium, highlighting the role of women in public service and leadership.
On Thursday, Rahatkar will inaugurate the Bengal Women’s Development Conclave 2026, titled ‘Nari Netritwe Unnoto Bangla’, at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre in Kolkata, the release said.
The conclave will bring policymakers, senior government officials, academics, entrepreneurs and women leaders to discuss a roadmap for women’s development and leadership in the state, it said.
On the same day, the NCW chief will chair a high-level review meeting with the director general of police and senior officers to assess the institutional response to crimes against women and review measures relating to women’s safety.
A key feature of the visit will be “two ‘Mahila Jan Sunwais’, on August 6, at the Police Training School (PTS) auditorium in Kolkata and on August 7 at the District Magistrate’s office in Howrah”, the NCW said.
“This will be the first time that the NCW chairperson will personally conduct ‘Mahila Jan Sunwais’ in West Bengal, providing women across the state with a direct platform to present their grievances before the commission and facilitating timely redressal through coordination with the concerned authorities. Walk-in complaints will also be accepted,” the release said.
On Friday, Rahatkar will preside over a POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) training and workshop at Sarat Sadan in Howrah before holding a review meeting with district administration and police officials to assess the implementation of women-centric initiatives, it said.
She will also address an anti-human trafficking workshop at the BSF South Bengal Frontier headquarters in New Town, Kolkata.
The visit will reflect the NCW’s commitment to strengthening institutional mechanisms for women’s safety, improving access to justice, enhancing legal awareness and fostering greater coordination among stakeholders for the effective implementation of laws and policies aimed at protecting and empowering women, the release added.
