Mumbai, Oct 7 (PTI) A 49-year-old man has been booked for allegedly transporting hydrochloric acid, a highly corrosive substance, in a sports utility vehicle (SUV) without valid permits, a Mumbai police official said on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team recently checked a Ford Endeavour parked near St. Xavier’s School at Ratnanagar in suburban Dahisar (East).

A search of the SUV led to the discovery of 52.5 litres of hydrochloric acid stored in ten plastic cans of different sizes, the official said.

The occupant of the vehicle, identified as local resident Ajay Jitnarayan Singh, failed to produce any valid licence, permit, or legal documentation for transporting or selling the colourless chemical, he said.

Police have seized the acid and the vehicle, he said.

A case was subsequently registered at the Dahisar police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Singh was served a notice under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, requiring his appearance for investigation, the official added. PTI ZA NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
