Mandla (MP), Oct 7 (PTI) A tigress being treated for symptoms of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) infection died in the Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Wednesday.

The three-year-old big cat, which had been kept at the Wildlife Treatment Centre in the Mukki range of the protected forest, died on Tuesday, said Deputy Director PK Verma of Kanha Tiger Reserve.

The animal, which was not from Kanha, had shown symptoms of CDV infection.

Canine distemper is a contagious and often fatal viral disease that can spread from domestic dogs or wild carnivores to endangered tiger populations.

Officials said a patrol team had spotted the tigress in a very weak state on August 26. It had been under the supervision of wildlife veterinarians since August 27. During treatment, symptoms of CDV were detected, they said.

As per the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) standard operating procedures, a wildlife veterinarian from Kanha and another from Baihar jointly conducted the post-mortem examination on Wednesday.

Following the autopsy, the carcass was cremated as per the prescribed procedure. Vital organs and biological samples collected during the post-mortem have been sent to a laboratory in Jabalpur for forensic and pathological examination, officials said. PTI COR MAS NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
