Gwalior, Oct 4 (PTI) The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Gwalior on Sunday rescued four women from a train and arrested two men suspected of trafficking them to India from a refugee camp in Bangladesh to facilitate their marriages to men in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The women, all aged above 18 and originally from Myanmar, were allegedly brought to India illegally from the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh, according to a GRP press statement.

Officials said they suspect the women may have been brought to India as part of a human trafficking network.

Acting on inputs that two men travelling on the Swarna Jayanti Express (train number 12643) were allegedly involved in bringing women from Myanmar, a Gwalior GRP team led by station in-charge Deepiksha Tomar searched the train.

Police questioned one Mubeen (25), who said he lives in Hyderabad and possesses a United Nations refugee card, the release said.

Mubeen told police that Mohammed Hasan (35) was also travelling with him and was involved in bringing women from the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh to India.

Police subsequently found four women travelling with them. All four are Myanmar nationals, the statement read.

GRP said the women, who were rescued, were allegedly being taken to Jammu and Kashmir, where their marriages had been fixed.

The two men have been arrested, and further investigation is underway to establish how the women were brought into India and whether they were victims of human trafficking, said officials. PTI COR LAL NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
