Aizawl, Oct 15 (PTI) Lawngtlai administration in Mizoram is taking steps to enforce restrictions on refugees staying in the district and curb unauthorised trading activities with Myanmar, Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga said on Thursday.
Lalruatsanga made the remarks while chairing a meeting with leaders of the Central Young Lai Association (CYLA), the largest civil society organisation in the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) area, to discuss the seizure of 10 pickup vehicles allegedly entering the district in violation of an order issued by the district magistrate.
According to officials, the vehicles were intercepted by volunteers of the Young Lai Association (YLA) in the AOC Veng area of Lawngtlai on Tuesday while travelling from Aizawl.
They were subsequently handed over to the enforcement authorities of the District Transport Office (DTO).
Lalruatsanga said clear rules had been put in place to regulate the movement of refugees and their trading activities, particularly along the Myanmar border, and stressed the need for strict compliance.
He said the administration was working in close coordination with the LADC and appreciated the cooperation extended by NGOs in implementing the measures.
The district administration was also closely monitoring cross-border movement and trade to ensure that all activities were carried out in accordance with the law, he said.
Expressing concern over reports of unauthorised vehicle checks and the collection of money from vehicles entering and leaving the district, Lalruatsanga said such practices were unacceptable, and those involved would be identified and dealt with according to law.
Nearly 30,000 people from Myanmar are currently taking shelter across the state, with a large number of them living in Lawngtlai district, officials said.
Recently, a meeting chaired by the Lawngtlai district administration had flagged an increase in vehicle thefts and the illegal movement of vehicles through the district.
The administration has called for intensified surveillance of stolen vehicles and those allegedly being taken to Myanmar for sale, including new vehicles purchased using Indian documents or allegedly improper documentation. PTI CORR MNB
