Aizawl, May 5 (PTI) Mizoram Information and Public Relations Minister B Lalchhanzova on Tuesday hailed All India Radio (AIR) Aizawl as a “vital guardian of Mizo identity” as the country’s oldest broadcaster organised a musical concert as part of celebrations of its 90 years of existence.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister lauded AIR for its long journey and said that it has played a vital role in preserving Mizo culture and language at a time when many indigenous cultures globally are gradually disappearing and are under threat.

He said that AIR has evolved beyond a mere media outlet to become a vital custodian of Mizo identity as it significantly contributed to the promotion of Mizo literature and music, instilling pride in one’s heritage, and imparting positive values to society.

AIR Aizawl director and cluster head DR Lalropuia, in his address, traced the evolution of the broadcaster, noting that AIR has been serving as a key medium of communication for the masses even before India’s independence.

Beyond being merely a news broadcaster, it has functioned as a crucial link between the government and the people, contributing to national development and holding an important role in the country’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, he said.

Established on 8th June, 1936, with its headquarters at New Delhi, AIR presently operates 230 stations across the country, including AIR Aizawl.

As part of the 90th anniversary celebration, AIR Aizawl will organise a Walkathon on Friday, and the main commemorative event will be held on June 8 at Vanapa Hall here, which will be graced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma. PTI CORR RG
