Aizawl, Jul 30 (PTI) Congress leaders and workers staged a protest near the Lok Bhavan here on Tuesday against the detention of Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders in the national capital for their sit-in outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.
State Congress spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei told PTI that the protest was to express solidarity with Gandhi in his fight to safeguard the students’ rights.
The protesters handed over a memorandum to Governor Vijay Kumar Singh, addressed to PM Modi, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over irregularities in examinations.
The party blamed Prime Minister Modi and his government for “failing” to protect the rights and interests of students across the country and demanded a discussion in Parliament on examination irregularities.
It also demanded immediate withdrawal of all FIRs filed against students during a massive protest in Delhi on Monday.
Opposition leaders, including Congress’ Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, were forcibly removed by police after they staged a dharna outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi.
