New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) A mega cleanliness drive was held at around 300 locations across Delhi on Thursday, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, several Union ministers, senior government officials, students, sanitation workers and residents participating in the citywide campaign.

The drive, held under the ‘Swachhta Hi Seva 2026’ campaign, covered schools, markets, residential areas, parks and other public spaces, with multiple programmes organised in the city.

Gupta participated in the campaign at Kamla Nehru Ridge along with students and sanitation workers and said cleanliness should become part of people’s regular habits and lifestyle.

“Cleanliness should be a part of our regular habit and lifestyle. We all should have a sense of responsibility towards it,” she said.

The campaign also saw Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and G Kishan Reddy, Delhi minister Parvesh Verma and senior officials taking part in cleanliness activities at different locations in the New Delhi area.

Rijiju joined the campaign at Navyug School on Peshwa Road near Gole Market, where students, teachers and local residents participated in the cleanliness activities. Reddy took part in a similar programme at Yashwant Singh Place in Chanakyapuri and interacted with sanitation workers.

Mishra said the campaign was being conducted at 300 locations across the city and called cleanliness a “collective and moral responsibility”, urging people to participate in keeping Delhi clean.

As part of the day’s activities, Singh inaugurated a community toilet facility at Jodhpur Mess on Pandara Road. The New Delhi Municipal Council said the facility, described as its largest community toilet, was built at a cost of around Rs 1 crore with support from NBCC’s CSR funds.

The facility has separate sections for men and women, CCTV cameras and other provisions for hygiene and security.

The NDMC also organised a cleanliness drive at the National Police Memorial and adjoining areas in association with the Delhi Police and CRPF. Around 120 people participated, and approximately 300 kg of waste and silt was removed, according to the civic body.

Similar cleanliness activities were held at markets, schools, residential areas, offices, hospitals and institutional complexes in the NDMC area.

However, the campaign drew criticism from the Opposition, with AAP leader and Leader of Opposition in the MCD Ankush Narang alleging that garbage continued to accumulate across Delhi despite the BJP government’s cleanliness campaign.

Narang alleged that garbage was visible on streets and roads across the city and questioned the progress in clearing the landfill waste. He also criticised ministers and BJP leaders for participating in cleanliness activities at stretches that, according to him, were already clean.

The cleanliness drive was organised as part of the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, launched to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 25 years in public service. PTI MSJ VIT SMV RHL

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
