Imphal, Sep 16 (PTI) Temporary rotational power cuts have been imposed across Manipur amid a critical electricity shortage of 90 mw, a statement said on Wednesday.
The Manipur State Power Distribution Company Limited (MSPDCL) said the state currently has an available power supply of 180 mw against a peak demand of 270 mw.
“This is a necessary measure (power cuts) to maintain grid stability amid severe power supply constraints,” the distribution company said in a statement.
The power shortage has been attributed to lower hydropower generation due to erratic rainfall linked to El Nino weather patterns, it said.
MSPDCL also cited reduced thermal power generation caused by coal shortages and the non-availability of adequate power in the energy market as factors contributing to the crisis.
The company said the supply constraints were affecting several states across the country.
In coordination with the Manipur government, MSPDCL is exploring all possible alternatives to minimise the duration of the interruptions and restore normal power supply at the earliest, it said. PTI CORR SOM
