Imphal, Oct 4 (PTI) The body of a 71-year-old man, who went missing a day earlier, was found in a remote forested area in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Sunday, officials said.

Hemjang Haokip, a resident of Khunkho Kuki village near the Leimakhong Army Headquarters, had allegedly been abducted from his farm hut on Saturday evening, they said.

According to villagers, Haokip had gone to his field but did not return by late evening, prompting a search operation.

The farm hut was also found razed to the ground, they said.

Haokip’s body was recovered from a nearby remote forested area on Sunday afternoon. His hands were tied with a rope, and there were signs of physical assault, officials said.

The Khunkho Kuki Village Authority condemned the incident, describing it as a targeted act of violence against a defenceless senior citizen and a grave violation of human rights.

In a statement, the village authority alleged that a Naga armed outfit was involved in the abduction.

More than 40 people have been killed in violence between Kuki and Naga communities since February this year, with the killings reported from Ukhrul, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Tamenglong and Noney districts. PTI CORR SOM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
