Latur (Maharashtra), Sep 8 (PTI) A man allegedly committed suicide in Latur district on Tuesday, leading to a road blockade by villagers who claimed that he took the extreme step over the Maratha reservation issue.
The incident came amid Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange’s ongoing hunger strike.
Sunil Vinayak Birajdar jumped into a well at Sumthana village in Shirur Anantpal tehsil at around 3 pm, police said.
Villagers claimed that a note purportedly written by him stated that he was ending his life for the cause of Maratha reservation.
Family members and villagers placed the body on Udgir-Latur road at around 7 pm, bringing traffic to a standstill. The protest was continuing till late at night.
The protesters demanded a written assurance that a member of Birajdar’s family will be given a government job, and a written decision on issuing Kunbi caste certificates to members of the Maratha community.
They will not shift the body and conduct the last rites till then, they said.
Police and administrative officials were holding talks with the protesters, officials said. PTI COR KRK
