Kolkata, Oct 4 (PTI) Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday condemned the attack on advocate Samim Ahammed in Paschim Medinipur district, alleging that the BJP was behind it.

Banerjee said she was “deeply disturbed” by the attack on Ahammed, a member of the West Bengal Bar Council, near Salboni police station on Saturday night.

“I strongly condemn such repeated atrocities by hooligans of BJP and urge the Administration to ensure the safety and security of advocates and take firm, impartial action against those responsible,” the TMC founder said in a social media post.

“I am shocked to learn that he was even pressured to alter his complaint. Following the intervention of the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Samim returned home safely,” she claimed.

Banerjee said the recent attacks on advocates at the Bankshall court in Kolkata and the Baruipur court in the South 24 Parganas district were equally unacceptable.

Asserting that West Bengal cannot permit a culture of intimidation and “jungle raj”, she said the rule of law must prevail over political violence.

“Every advocate, irrespective of political affiliation or ideology, must be able to discharge their professional duties without fear,” she said. PTI SUS SOM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
