Tirunelveli (Tamil Nadu), Jul 27 (PTI) Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday slammed the state government for arresting DMK MLA G V Markandeyan, after meeting the legislator at the Palayamkottai Central Prison.
“Filing unnecessary and false cases against those expressing their opinions on social media, as well as office-bearers of opposition parties, seems to be the sole work of this government,” Udhyanidhi said.
The DMK leader, who interacted with Markandeyan for about 30 minutes, said he assured him that the DMK high command would provide all necessary legal assistance.
“Along with former Speaker Appavu, Geetha Jeevan, and Anitha Radhakrishnan, I met our Vilathikulam MLA, dear brother Markandeyan, to inquire about his health. He is doing very well,” he added.
Markandeyan was arrested in Tuticorin following a police complaint that he made defamatory and threatening remarks against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during a public meeting in Kovilpatti. The DMK legislator was arrested for his purported “we will crush your bones” remark against Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
Speaking to reporters, Udhyanidhi hit out at the government, accusing it of resorting to arrests and filing cases against opposition MLAs. The DMK has described the police action as a campaign of political vendetta by the TVK-led government, while the ruling party maintained the arrest followed due legal process.
On his party’s resilience against political pressure, the Leader of Opposition said, “DMK is a movement that has faced far greater repression than this.” Over 200 party workers gathered outside the prison premises during his visit. PTI JR JR ADB
