LJP (Ramvilas) slams UP govt over denial of hospital admission to pregnant tribal woman

New Delhi, Oct 3 ( PTI) The Lok Janshakti Party (Ramvilas) on Saturday decried the denial of admission to a pregnant Dalit woman at the district hospital in Bhadohi, forcing her to deliver the baby on a roadside, and asked the UP government to fix accountability.

The incident was not a “lapse” but a “catastrophic failure of governance,” the party, founded by the late Ram Vilas Paswan, a Dalit, said.

Rani Vanvasi, 20, was allegedly denied admission to Maharaja Chet Singh Government District Hospital on Monday by the doctors, who said she was anaemic and there was no blood.

However, Rani’s family alleged that doctors and a staff nurse refused to attend to her because she belongs to the Musahar tribal community.

Rani eventually delivered the baby out in the open on Tuesday night with the help of women accompanying her.

A three-member inquiry team, constituted on the direction of the district magistrate, found four doctors and a nurse guilty of serious negligence.

LJP(RV) national spokesperson Ritesh Kumar said the Uttar Pradesh government should fix accountability and improve emergency care instead of making excuses.

“When a woman in labour is reportedly turned away from a government hospital and forced to give birth by roadside, this is not a ‘lapse’ — it is a catastrophic failure of governance,” Kumar said on X.

“The @UPGovt administration owes public answers, accountability and functioning emergency care — not excuses. Shameful,” he added. PTI ADI VN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
