New Delhi: Even as climate and education activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health continues to be monitored by Safdarjung Hospital, the Padma Shree awardee has said he would break his fast if the government takes accountability of the recent failures in education system, essentially recent paper leaks.
On Monday, protesters from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) began a march towards Parliament from the Jantar Mantar protest site despite prohibitory orders in place. The Delhi Police had said there was no permission sought or granted. This march comes two days after Wangchuk was whisked away from the Jantar Mantar protest site.
Three other students—Neha, Manish and Ameen—who had also joined the protest and were part of the hunger strike broke their fast, after a period of 23 days, on Monday. A statement from the All India Students’ Association said, “The student leaders have fought valiantly, all of them lost more than 12 per cent of their body mass, along with preserving dangerously low blood sugar levels and catastrophic impacts on their organs.”
Wangchuk on Sunday wrote a letter, claiming to be under “illegal detention” at the hospital. In his letter, he wrote, “Many of you have asked me when I will end my fast, as mentioned earlier to supporters, I will end my fast on July 20, if… ”
He went on to lay down conditions for ending his hunger strike, the first one being that government take accountability for the recent failures in the education system. “If I and the CJP leadership can reach the doorsteps of Parliament where honourable members and leaders of various parties assure us that they will now take up the issue in the Parliament…”
Further, he has said, “If my health or other factors do not permit this then the Hon’ble MPs and leaders of different parties visit this hospital and give the above assurance.”
In a health bulletin issued at 10 am on Monday, Safdarjung Hospital said that Wangchuk continues to receive comprehensive medical care at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital. “His vital parameters remain stable. Blood parameters continue to warrant close clinical observation. He remains under continuous medical management and the close supervision of a multidisciplinary team of experts.”
Based on the clinical assessment of the treating teams from VMMC, Safdarjung Hospital and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, continued medical intervention and uninterrupted clinical monitoring remain necessary to ensure early detection and timely management of any potential complications, the hospital said. “He is receiving all required medical care, and his clinical condition continues to be closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team of experts.”
On Sunday, hours after the Delhi High Court upheld the Centre’s decision to ‘shift’ Sonam Wangchuk from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital, his wife Gitanjali Angmo told the media that the march to Parliament will happen. Speaking at a press conference outside Safdarjung Hospital’s emergency gate, Angmo said that her husband has time and again emphasised that he is not the cause of this movement, but has only been “a voice for the youth”.
