Mumbai, Oct 2 (PTI) A lawyers’ association from Maharashtra’s Palghar district has come out in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and said it will provide free legal assistance to members of the fledgling group if they face any “repression”.

“Ultimately, democratic values should remain alive and for that, if they need any such help on the judicial forum, some lawyers like us will definitely do the work for them free of charge,” Digambar Desai, a spokesperson of the Vasai Lawyers Association, told reporters on Friday.

Desai was responding to a question about whether lawyers would be willing to defend CJP members free of cost if cases were filed against them.

He said lawyers were prepared to support “common causes” and stand by those facing what he described as repression.

The statement comes as CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke is scheduled to hold a protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Friday against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CJP has been demanding Kumar’s resignation, accusing him of acting against democratic principles.

The Mumbai police, however, have not given permission to the CJP to hold its protest at Shivaji Park. PTI ND NR

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
