Kolkata, Apr 25 (PTI) Kolkata Police on Monday announced a series of traffic restrictions and diversions across the city in view of the Assembly elections, with regulations to remain in force on April 28, April 29 (poll day) and May 4 (counting day).
According to the order, movement of all goods vehicles, except those engaged in election-related duties, will be restricted between 5 am and 10 pm on polling and counting days.
Several key stretches in south and central Kolkata, including areas around Gitanjali Road, RB Connector, Alipore, Hazra and Strand Road, will witness one-way regulations, diversions or complete closure at different times, the Kolkata Police said in a notification.
Restrictions will also be imposed near important facilities such as counting centres and polling distribution hubs, with entry limited to authorised election vehicles.
“No vehicles, except those connected with elections, will be allowed to park in the vicinity of any counting centre on May 4,” the notification said.
Police further said vehicular movement may be curtailed or diverted along multiple arterial roads, including DH Road, Raja SC Mallick Road and Ballygunge Circular Road, depending on necessity.
Temporary relocation of bus stands and auto stands has also been notified in certain areas to ease congestion.
Emphasising preparedness, an official said, “These measures are aimed at ensuring smooth conduct of poll-related activities while minimising inconvenience to the public.” The notification added that the restrictions will operate in addition to existing traffic regulations in force across the city.
Commissioner of Police Ajay Nand said the measures have been put in place “in the interest of public safety and convenience” during the electoral process.
“Movement of vehicles shall be regulated in the manner prescribed, notwithstanding any other orders in force on the specified dates,” the notification stated.
“Movement of all types of vehicles, including election vehicles, will be regulated as and when considered necessary by traffic police on duty,” a senior officer said, indicating that diversions would be enforced dynamically depending on ground conditions. PTI SCH MNB
